It’s Time to Curate Your Closet for Fall

It’s time to curate your home for Fall…

Do you like to change your home decor for each season or holiday? Even if you are like me, who keeps a basic layout throughout the year with just hints of the current season, the change in temps means at least some things need to be swapped out even if your decor doesn’t - my favorite things to curate during this time are clothing, skincare, and rituals/routines. Pumpkins are optional, but highly encouraged. In this week’s newsletter, we will talk about curating our wardrobes for the Fall.

Item #1 to Curate: Wardrobe

The weather is getting a little chilly. It’s time to swap out those tanks and shorts for pants, leggings, sweaters, and boots! ‘Tis the season to layer. During this time of year, I plan out the next few months and just know that I will need to have warm clothes on hand, even if it’s deceivingly warm out now.

Do it in a weekend: Go through your wardrobe one drawer at a time, and store away all your summer clothes that you’ll freeze your butt off if you were to wear in the cold - mainly tank tops and spaghetti strap dresses. Shorts and skirts can be worn if layered with leggings or tights, but I usually still separate these out because I know come winter they won’t be used at all. I have one section of a drawer I use for “in between” seasons - right now these are shorts or skirts I know I can still wear for a bit, but in the next month or so may use less and less.

Bring out the layers: Put layers like sweaters, light jackets, and leggings within reach. During early Fall (especially here in Arizona), the weather may fluctuate, hot one day and cool another, so I keep a few “warm weather” shoes handy like slip ons and sandals along with “cool weather” options like ankle boots too. Light sweaters or jackets are great to take with you when running errands, worn over a short sleeved cotton shirt.

Fill in the Gaps: Once you’ve gone through all your clothes and reorganized, it’s time to replace anything you’ll need for the cooler months. For me this year, it’s pants and shoes. Last year, I decided to use what I had, and over the course of a year my pants have ripped at the knee more and more while playing with my son on the ground. While they look trendy, they won’t keep me totally warm in the wintertime. Now that I am aware of what gaps I need to fill in my own wardrobe I can keep an eye out for sales and deals as well as look to buy items that I really love and will keep a few years rather than buying a bunch of random clothes every year. This is one way to avoid “fast fashion”.

Bonus Points: Get the family involved and teach them to curate their own clothes too! Make it a race or competition or any other way to make it a fun event. Then gather everyone together to donate clothes no longer needed and have a family shopping trip if your budget allows. If brand new clothes are not in the budget for everyone in the family or you want to do your part in sustainable fashion, consider consignment options like Buffalo Exchange and Plato’s Closet, which may offer store credit from clothes they may want to buy from you.

See you next week!
